Hoonah is a small Tlingit community on the northeast side of Chichigof Island in the southeastern region of Alaska. The island chain of southeast Alaska has long been known as the Alexander Achipelago. These islands are essentially a submerged mountain range rising up from the Pacific Ocean floor. This is a fractured landscape of deep channels and fjords that wind their way through these steep, mountain top islands to stir up some of the most turbulent tidal currents found anywhere in the world. A constant recirculation of deep ocean water from the north Pacific through this washing machine of island passes creates a rich and dynamic environment for resident sea life, as well as the diverse bounty of life that comes a goes with the changing of the seasons.
